Move over laws are designed to protect emergency responders who are working at the scene of a road incident. When an emergency vehicle is stopped with its lights flashing, these laws generally require drivers to change lanes, if it is safe to do so, to vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle. This action helps to ensure a safe environment for the personnel attending to emergencies, highlighting the importance of safety in roadside situations.

Furthermore, these laws are applicable to all drivers, not just those in large vehicles, which underscores the collective responsibility of all motorists to contribute to road safety. This requirement to vacate the lane minimizes the risk of accidents within that vicinity, allowing emergency services to operate effectively and without added danger from passing traffic.
